2026 Toyota Tundra and Toyota Tacoma, the two trucks compared on this page

2026 Toyota Tundra and Tacoma vs the Competition

Two Toyota trucks, two different arguments. The Tundra is the full-size answer, the one you want when there is a trailer in the driveway most weekends and a job site on the other end of it. The Tacoma is the midsize answer, the truck that still fits a Lincolnwood garage and does real work anyway. Most people who come see us on Cicero Avenue already know which size they need. What they want is a straight comparison against the trucks they have been reading about.

So that is what this page is. Every maximum tow rating in both segments, sitting next to the exact build that earns it, because that is the part of truck shopping that goes sideways. A manufacturer publishes one headline figure per nameplate, and that figure belongs to one specific combination of cab, bed, drivetrain, axle and tow package. It is rarely the combination most buyers order.

Read the table first. The sections under it cover what a tow rating does not measure.

Maximum towing across the 2026 half-ton and midsize field

Every gasoline and hybrid half-ton and midsize pickup you can order new this year, ranked by published ceiling.

Maximum published towing, 2026 gasoline and hybrid full-size half-ton and midsize pickups, with the build that earns each rating
Truck Segment Maximum towing Build that earns the rating
Ford F-150 Full-size half-ton 13,500 lb 3.5L EcoBoost V6, SuperCrew 4×4, 6.5-ft box, Tow/Haul Package with the Max Tow axle
Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Full-size half-ton 13,300 lb 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel, Double Cab 2WD, standard bed, Max Trailering Package, 20-inch wheels. The 6.2L V8 is rated 13,200 lb
GMC Sierra 1500 Full-size half-ton 13,300 lb 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel, Double Cab 2WD, standard bed, Max Trailering Package, 20-inch wheels
Toyota Tundra Full-size half-ton 12,000 lb i-FORCE 3.4L twin-turbo V6, SR5 Double Cab 4×2, 6.5-ft bed, tow package. i-FORCE MAX hybrid is rated 11,450 lb
Ram 1500 Full-size half-ton 11,610 lb Standard Output 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo I6, Quad Cab 4×2, 3.92 axle, Trailer-Tow Group
Chevrolet Colorado Midsize 7,700 lb 2.7L TurboMax, Crew Cab 2WD, trailering package
GMC Canyon Midsize 7,700 lb 2.7L TurboMax, trailering package
Jeep Gladiator Midsize 7,700 lb 3.6L Pentastar V6 with the Max Tow Package
Ford Ranger Midsize 7,500 lb 2.3L EcoBoost with the Trailer Tow Package. The 2.7L EcoBoost V6 carries the same rating
Nissan Frontier Midsize 7,150 lb 3.8L V6, King Cab 4×2
Toyota Tacoma Midsize 6,500 lb i-FORCE 2.4L turbo gas, SR5 or TRD PreRunner XtraCab, 6-ft bed, tow package. i-FORCE MAX hybrid is rated 6,000 lb
Honda Ridgeline Midsize 5,000 lb 3.5L V6, all-wheel drive, every trim, with the towing equipment installed

Two things worth taking from that. The first is that the two segments do not overlap, so size is the decision that comes before every other one, and it is settled by the heaviest thing you tow rather than by the truck you like the look of. The second is that the right-hand column is doing most of the work. The same nameplate swings by thousands of pounds depending on how it left the factory, which is why a rating you read online and a rating on your door jamb can be very different numbers.

Bring us the trailer you own, or the one you are about to buy, and we will tell you which trucks on our lot are rated for it and which ones are not.

The rating that runs out first

Payload is the weight a truck can carry rather than pull, and it counts everything: passengers, the cooler, the tools behind the seat, and the downward force the trailer puts on the hitch. That last part is called tongue weight, and on a conventional trailer it usually runs between a tenth and a seventh of the loaded trailer weight. It comes straight off your payload before you have put a single person in the cab.

That is why payload, not tow rating, is what stops most people. A 2026 Tundra is rated to carry up to 1,940 pounds in its best configuration, a rear-drive Double Cab, and a 2026 Tacoma up to 1,705 pounds. Hitch a heavy trailer to either one and a meaningful share of that is spoken for before you load anything.

Tell us the loaded weight of your trailer and we will work backward from the payload sticker on the specific truck you are considering.

Tundra against the full-size field

The half-ton segment is the most competitive corner of the American market, and the Ford, Chevrolet, GMC and Ram entries are all serious trucks with deep configuration menus. Three of them publish a higher maximum tow rating than the Tundra, and the table shows which builds get them there.

Here is the tradeoff to plan around. If you spend most weeks near the top of the half-ton range, the better tool is a three-quarter-ton truck, whatever badge is on the tailgate, because payload and brake capacity give out before tow rating does. If you tow what most half-ton owners tow, a boat, a car hauler, a mid-size camper, a landscape trailer, then every truck in that group clears it, and the decision moves to what the truck is like the other six days of the week.

2026 Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain

That is where the Tundra makes its case. Both powertrains are twin-turbo V6s rather than a menu of engines to decode. Every trim rides on a multi-link coil rear suspension, which shows up as ride quality when the bed is empty, which is most of the time. Toyota includes the hitch receiver and trailer wiring connector on every 2026 grade, including the base SR, and the safety suite is the same on the least expensive Tundra as on the most expensive one.

The way to settle it is a loaded drive. Bring your trailer to Lincolnwood and hitch it to the truck before you sign anything.

Tacoma against the midsize field

Midsize is the segment where the numbers cluster. The General Motors twins, the Gladiator, the Ranger and the Frontier all publish tow ratings above the Tacoma, and the Ridgeline sits below it. In a group that tight, the spread between first and last is a single trailer size, and almost everyone shopping midsize is towing something well inside all of it.

2026 Toyota Tacoma i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain

The Tacoma answers with breadth. It is the only truck in the group offered with a hybrid powertrain, so you can order it for low-end pull or for fuel economy without changing trucks. The off-road ladder runs from a TRD Off-Road with a locking rear differential and crawl control, through the overlanding-focused Trailhunter, to the TRD Pro with its internal-bypass shocks and isolated performance seats. Every 2026 Tacoma, including the base SR, comes with the Class IV hitch receiver and wiring harness already installed.

If you are cross-shopping the segment, drive the Tacoma with the trailer connected and the bed loaded. That is the condition the differences show up in.

The i-FORCE MAX hybrid, and when it earns its keep

Toyota builds a hybrid version of both trucks, and both of them make more torque than their gasoline counterparts while carrying a slightly lower maximum tow rating. The table shows both ratings. What it cannot show is the part people notice on the road, which is where the torque arrives. An electric motor pulls from a standstill, so a loaded trailer moving off a light feels less like an event.

On the Tundra, i-FORCE MAX is standard on the Capstone and the TRD Pro and available on the Limited, Platinum and 1794 Edition. On the Tacoma it is the step up from the standard turbocharged engine, and it is standard on the Trailhunter and the TRD Pro.

The short version we give people on the lot: if you tow heavy and rarely, take the gasoline engine and the higher ceiling. If you tow moderate loads often, or you commute in Chicago north side traffic between trips, the hybrid is the one you will be happier with. Drive both and the answer usually settles itself in ten minutes.

Standard on every 2026 Tundra and Tacoma

Neither truck asks you to climb the trim ladder to get the equipment that matters. These come on every grade of both:

  • Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, the current version of the driver assistance suite
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, which can warn and then brake if you do not
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which holds a gap in traffic down to a stop
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Lane Tracing Assist
  • Automatic High Beams and Road Sign Assist
  • Trailer-Sway Control, which trims brake pressure and engine torque when a trailer starts to move around behind you
  • A hitch receiver and trailer wiring connector, installed at the factory
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with USB-C ports and Bluetooth

Higher trims add the larger multimedia screen, the panoramic camera views and the premium audio. None of that is what keeps you out of trouble on the Edens with a boat behind you. The list above is.

Buying a Toyota truck on the North Shore

A truck around here does not get to specialize. It hauls to a job site in Skokie on Monday, sits in a Niles driveway under road salt in February, pulls a boat up to Wisconsin in July and does the school run in Wilmette in between. That is a wide brief for one vehicle, and it is why the configuration conversation is worth having before the order goes in rather than after it.

We sell to buyers across Lincolnwood, Skokie, Niles, Evanston, Glenview and Northbrook, and to customers from the North Shore and the Chicago north side neighborhoods where a full-size crew cab is a parking decision as much as a towing one. Cab size, bed length and turning circle deserve as much attention as the tow rating, and they are easier to judge standing next to the trucks than on a spec page.

We are at 7225 North Cicero Avenue in Lincolnwood, off the Edens. Come drive a Tundra and a Tacoma back to back and see which size the job calls for.

Toyota truck questions we get asked

How much can the 2026 Toyota Tundra tow?

Up to 12,000 pounds, and that rating belongs to one build: the i-FORCE 3.4L twin-turbo V6 in an SR5 Double Cab, rear-wheel drive, with the 6.5-foot bed and the tow package. Other cab, bed and drivetrain combinations rate lower, and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid is rated up to 11,450 pounds.

How much can the 2026 Toyota Tacoma tow?

Up to 6,500 pounds with the i-FORCE 2.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, on an SR5 or TRD PreRunner XtraCab with the 6-foot bed and the tow package. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid is rated up to 6,000 pounds, and a base SR with the automatic transmission is rated 3,500 pounds.

Does the Ford F-150 tow more than the Toyota Tundra?

Yes. The F-150 is rated up to 13,500 pounds with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6, the Tow/Haul Package and the Max Tow axle, against 12,000 pounds for a Tundra SR5 Double Cab 4×2 with the tow package. Both figures require one specific build, and most trucks sold in either lineup are rated below them.

Which midsize truck tows the most in 2026?

The Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon and Jeep Gladiator lead the midsize class at 7,700 pounds, ahead of the Ford Ranger at 7,500 and the Nissan Frontier at 7,150. The Toyota Tacoma is rated up to 6,500 pounds with the gasoline i-FORCE engine and the Honda Ridgeline up to 5,000 pounds.

Does the i-FORCE MAX hybrid tow more than the gasoline engine?

No. On both trucks the gasoline i-FORCE engine carries the higher maximum tow rating, and the hybrid trades a little of that ceiling for more torque low in the rev range, which is what you feel getting a loaded trailer moving from a stop.

What does ToyotaCare cover on a 2026 Toyota truck?

On 2026 model year vehicles, ToyotaCare covers normal factory scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, with 24-hour roadside assistance for 2 years and unlimited miles. Toyota has set different terms for 2027 model year vehicles, so ask us which plan applies to the truck you are looking at.

What safety features are standard on the 2026 Tundra and Tacoma?

Every grade of both trucks comes with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which includes the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beams and Road Sign Assist. Trailer-Sway Control is also standard.
